On Friday we played Morley Cricket Club's annual charity golf day at Hanging Heaton. We sponsor the club, and the invitation to play comes with it.
Bacon sarnies and coffee before we teed off, pie, peas, chips and a beer at the end, and a course in better nick than any of our swings.
The team
Three cricket club members and Jack, all mid-to-high handicaps, all casual about it. Ryan Dowse organised the day and put us on his team next to two of the club's first team squad, which flattered our card more than our golf.
How we got on
Fifth of seven, with a handful of shots covering the whole field. Gross 74, net 55. The front nine went well. The back nine went.
The 18th was the round: a big drive from Heppy, a sensible lay-up from Dowse, then Higgins taking a putter from 130 yards, landing it two feet away and holing it for birdie.
Hot day, fast greens, money raised.

Andrew and Jack both live round here, and the studio is in Morley. Andrew's daughter is one of the club's junior cricketers, so we see the coaching side of it close up: kids being taught properly, on a summer evening, by people giving up their own time.
The club works as a hub in a way not much else in the town does. Sponsoring it isn't marketing. It's the difference between running a business in a place and being part of it, and we'd rather be the second thing. There's more on why we back the club if you want the longer answer. Days like this raise money for the club, and they put local businesses and club members on the same team for a few hours, which is worth nearly as much.
